LAERI was co-founded in 2012 by Meredith Phillips and Kyo Yamashiro. Meredith Phillips is an associate professor of public policy and sociology at UCLA whose research addresses educational inequality. Kyo Yamashiro is an associate professor of education and director of the Urban Leadership doctoral program in Claremont Graduate University’s School of Educational Studies with a background in research and past district experience in Long Beach and San Diego.
Past and present LAUSD leaders have been instrumental in supporting the development of this research-practice partnership, including Dr. Ray Cortines (while he was Superintendent) and Dr. Cynthia Lim (in her role as Executive Director of Data & Accountability). Dr. Frances Gipson, Chief Academic Officer, and Dr. Oscar LaFarga, Executive Director of Data & Accountability, are currently collaborating with our team on the partnership work.
